Akshaya Tritiya, the third day of the bright fortnight in the month of Vaishakha, corresponding this year to May 8th (Mother’s Day) in California. Today is Akshaya Tritiya, the third day of the bright fortnight in the month of Vaishakha, corresponding this year to April 18th in California.
Akshaya Tritiya is ruled by Bhagavan Vishnu. This is the anniversary of the first food alms given to Rishabha, the first naga sadhu according to both Vedic and Jain tradition;, the day that Treta Yuga started; the advent day of Lord Parashurama (this year celebrated the day before); the day Mother Ganga began her decent from heaven; the day that Lord Kubera received his position of custodian of wealth and property from Lord Shiva; the day that Rishi Vyasa began dictating the epic Mahabharata to Lord Ganesha; and the day that Yudishtira received the Akshaya Patra , the unending bowl which he used to serve food for all in his kingdom.
For Devi upasaks this is also celebrated as Matangi Jayanti, the advent anniversary of Goddess Matangi.
On this holy day, both moon and sun are in exalted positions, and every moment is considered auspicious. Akshay means “without decay” or “ever-lasting”. Hence the benefits of spiritual practices performed on this day never diminish and remain with the aspirant forever. It is considered the best day to start any new auspicious project or business ventures. Many people purchase gold on this day, symbolic of long-lasting wealth. The scriptures say the knowledge gained and charity done on this day is very fruitful.
